South Sycamore Wetland

Designed by University of Iowa professor Lon Drake, the wetland serves a multitude of functions. The system of channels and basins effectively clean the storm water runoff from hundreds of houses in the Grant Wood Elementary School area. The huge water catchment basins can be seen from aerial views of the area. It is home to many species of plants, insects, and animals.

The winding trails and diverse terrain creates a great habitat for children and adults to wade, get muddy, see waterfowl, catch frogs, and enjoy themselves. Bird watchers, insect enthusiasts, and photographers will enjoy the bike trip to this large area on the south side of Iowa City.
