New Pioneer Edible Landscape

New Pioneer is a member-owned grocery specializing in local and natural foods, and healthy products. As leaders in the local food movement, they transformed the landscape of their nearby administration building into a thriving jungle of edibles. (The building is a renovated Victorian house.)

Through several workshops hosted by Backyard Abundance in 2010, the landscape was designed and implemented to emulate the patterns of a healthy woodland ecosystem. The emerging food forest contains dwarf apple trees, pawpaw trees, seaberry trees, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, currants, chokeberry (arionia) shrubs, gooseberry shrubs, asparagus, and a variety of herbs and ground covers. All plants work together to provide food, suppress weeds, provide nutrients, or attract beneficial insects just like a healthy woodland.

The backyard vegetable garden changes each year, providing loads of diverse produce for caretakers and New Pioneer staff. And don’t miss the alley orchard located behind the building across the alleyway.
